Madonna’s diva rivalry with Lady Gaga may be taken up a notch when her MDNA tour kicks off Thursday at Tel Aviv, Israel’s Ramat Gan Stadium. In new rehearsal footage, the 53-year-old legend is seen singing a mashup of her “Express Yourself” and Gaga’s “Born This Way” that concludes with a few lines from Madonna’s copycat-shaming “She’s Not Me.”
Last year, when Lady Gaga released her hit single “Born This Way,” controversy erupted over the song’s similarity to Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” (Never mind that much of the resemblance is rooted in both songs’ use of a pretty common disco chord progression.) At first, things seemed cool between the two singers. They’d always gotten along publicly, and Gaga told Jay Leno that M’s camp reached out to say all was well in the diva-verse with regard to the songs’ similarities (something later denied by Madonna’s people).
The whole thing appeared to have blown over until earlier this year, when Madonna was promoting her movie “W.E.” and her Super Bowl halftime performance during an ABC News interview. Madonna was asked what she thought of the comparisons, and in response she called Lady Gaga “reductive.”
Gaga’s been pretty quiet throughout, but it’s hard not to wonder if she’ll stay that way once word of this latest swipe makes its way to her ears. (Gaga is currently in Asia on her Born This Way Ball tour, and she was recently forced to cancel a planned show in Indonesia after receiving threats from fundamentalist Islamic groups in the country.)
New leaked footage from rehearsals for Madonna’s own road show showcases a reportedly planned mashup of “Express Yourself” and “Born This Way,” and while the resemblance between the two songs remains as striking as ever, that’s not the real story. Just those two songs layered together could have been fun: The two stars certainly have overlapping fanbases, who no doubt would have delighted in the winking acknowledgement of M’s influence on Gaga. But Madonna complicates things by concluding the medley with a few lines from her Hard Candy track “She’s Not Me,” a song about Madonna being emulated by another woman.
The inclusion of “She’s Not Me” makes the medley seem like yet another scathing dig at Gaga. It’s unknown whether Madonna was just goofing around during rehearsals or whether she plans to include that final digging refrain throughout her tour.
Is Madonna taking things too far, or are we misreading things? Good-natured ribbing or mean-spirited digging? You tell us in the comments below!
‘We are humans, not animals, save our souls,’ pleads Houla massacre witness
A witness to the brutal massacre in the Syrian town of Houla which left more than 100 people dead, many of them women and children, says he fears the killing will continue unless the international community takes action.
“We are human beings, not animals,” Mahmoud Al Houli told CNN by telephone. “I would like to call for the international community and the U.N. to save our souls, to help us find a solution. We only want freedom.”
He said conditions in Houla were “desperate,” with medical supplies and food running low, and a build-up of military personnel in the area leaving residents dreading a second wave of attacks.
“We are very afraid that there will be another massacre,” Al Houli added. “Military reinforcements have been brought in, and artillery, and we are afraid that the massacre will happen again.”
On Tuesday, a United Nations official said it was “clear” that Syrian government forces were involved in the slaughter last Friday, which he said was “an abominable crime.”
Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the U.N. human rights office, said the majority of victims died as a result of “summary executions” in which “armed men… went house to house, killing men, women and children.”

Syria has denied responsibility for the massacre, which it insists was carried out by “terrorists.” Countries around the world have expelled Syrian diplomats in protest at the killings.
But Al Houli said more needed to be done to prevent further tragedy.
“The situation here is very bad, very, very bad. There is a severe shortage of medical supplies in the local hospitals. Lots of people were injured, but there is a shortage of supplies to treat them with.
“Four checkpoints have been set up around the town, and nothing can enter — no food or medical supplies can come in. The electricity has been cut off. Things are desperate.”
Al Houli told CNN he was at a protest rally in the town on Friday when members of the military opened fire.
“We had a demonstration after Friday prayers, and all the men were there,” he explained. “The military started shooting at the demonstration.”
“After that, thugs from the regime came from the surrounding towns, to make a big massacre.
“While the men were at the demonstration, they attacked the women and children with knives and machine guns.”
He said he believed the men who carried out the attack were trying to incite a sectarian conflict in the region.
“Many civilians were killed. I saw the bodies of women, children killed by knives — I still have the image in my eyes.
“The bodies were taken to the mosques, because there were so many, there was nowhere else to put them.
“You have seen the bodies on television, on the computer, but we see them in real life.”
As he spoke to CNN, a voice boomed from a loudspeaker nearby. “Another person has died,” he explained. “They are making the announcement at the mosque.”
Al Houli was clear who he held responsible for the tragedy in Houla. “[President Bashar al-]Assad is a killer of children and women.
“He needs to leave Syria and get out of the country — that’s the best solution.
“If he leaves, we can go back to normal life.”
life’s journey Chloë Grace Moretz
Chloë Grace Moretz was born on February 10, 1997 in Atlanta, Georgia. At the mere age of 14, Chloë already has over 6 years of experience in the entertainment industry. She credits catching the “acting bug” around the age of six to practicing lines with her older brother Trevor, who was studying at the Professional Performing Arts High School in NYC at the time.
After the Moretz family relocated from New York to Los Angeles for her father’s plastic surgery practice, it didn’t take long for Chloë to jump into the entertainment industry. Chloë’s first acting gig came in 2004, when she played Violet in two episodes of the television show, “The Guardian.” A year later, she appeared in her first big film: the remake of the classic film, The Amityville Horror. At the time the film came out, Chloë was so young that she was not allowed to see it at the film’s premiere.
Chloë’s biggest break came in 2010, when she took on the controversial role of Mindy Macready, aka Hit-Girl, in Matthew Vaughn’s film adaptation of Mark Millar’s popular graphic novel series, Kick-Ass. Thanks to her intense training for the film, Chloë is trained in martial arts and weapons handling.
Chloë’s approach to acting has been consistent: “I always try to find something in my own life that connects me to the character. The more I live, the more I find things that I can use in my acting.” She adds, “I have learned never to judge any of the characters that I portray. Sometimes that is difficult to do, because as a human being, we tend to make judgments when we find out information about people and situations. In order to bring a character to life, though, I find that I cannot judge her or I won’t be true to her.”
To date, Chloë has been involved in over 20 film productions, guest starred in numerous television shows (including a two-year stint on Disney’s “My Friends Tigger & Pooh”), and has appeared in music videos for Best Coast and The Soft Pack.
With her popularity rising, Chloë has been featured in spreads for magazines such as Blackbook, Nylon, French Vogue, and W. She’s also appeared on the cover of Empire, Wonderland, Interview, and Teen Vogue. It’s probably no surprise that Chloë’s trendy sense of style has caught the attention of the fashion world, earning her a spot as a model in high fashion photoshoots and a valued guest at couture events.
Despite her blooming career and busy film and press schedule, Chloë’s family ensures that she maintains a grounded attitude and a relatively normal teenage life. Like other girls her age, Chloë likes to play video games, attend concerts, travel, and tweet about all of the above. She’s not yet allowed to buy designer clothes, and has only recently begun to wear heels, but her position as one of the youngest powerhouses in Hollywood already has been solidified.
The two guys going to the market.
